Helping People Move Toward the Life They Want

I provide individual therapy, couples counseling, family therapy, and clinical hypnosis in Auburn and Roseville, California.

If you are considering therapy, there is probably something in your life that is not working the way you want it to.

Maybe you understand the problem but keep getting pulled back into the same response. Maybe your relationship has become stuck in a pattern neither of you knows how to change. Maybe something has shifted in your life and the ways you used to cope no longer seem to fit.

I do not think people stay stuck because they are weak, resistant, or unwilling to change.

More often, they are relying on responses that once made sense.

Those responses may have helped you protect yourself, maintain a relationship, avoid conflict, stay in control, or get through a difficult period. The problem is that a strategy can make sense and still stop working.

My role is to help you understand what keeps happening, develop more choices in how you respond, and move toward the life and relationships you actually want.

How I Think About Therapy

I believe therapy should go somewhere.

Understanding yourself matters, but I do not think insight is the finish line.

You can understand why you struggle with boundaries and still have difficulty holding one when someone becomes upset. You can recognize the argument you and your partner keep having and still get pulled into it. You can know that anxiety is influencing a decision and still feel unable to choose differently.

The work becomes especially useful when what you understand in therapy begins changing what happens outside of therapy.

That is what I am interested in helping people develop.

My work is influenced by family systems, strategic psychotherapy, experiential approaches, mindfulness, and clinical hypnosis. I draw from these approaches according to the person and the problem rather than following the same formula with everyone.

Sometimes we need to understand the past.

Sometimes we need to look closely at what is maintaining the problem right now.

Sometimes we need to stop analyzing and actually try something different.

Good therapy requires knowing which one fits.

What It Is Like to Work With Me

My style is thoughtful, practical, curious, and active.

You can expect me to listen carefully and take your experience seriously. You can also expect me to ask questions, point out patterns, offer ideas, and sometimes challenge assumptions when I think doing so may be useful.

I do not see therapy as a relationship in which I am the expert on your life.

You know your history, relationships, values, and experience from the inside. I bring clinical training, an outside perspective, and a way of looking for patterns that may be difficult to see when you are living inside them.

We use both.

If something I suggest does not fit, I want to know. If we are heading in the wrong direction, we adjust. Therapy should be responsive enough to change when the work calls for it.

The goal is not for you to become good at therapy.

The goal is for you to become increasingly able to navigate your life without needing therapy to do it for you.

Who I Tend to Work Well With

I especially enjoy working with people who are curious about themselves and willing to participate actively in the process.

You may already have considerable insight. You may have read the books, thought deeply about your history, or been in therapy before.

What you want now may be help turning that understanding into something different in your everyday life.

I work with individuals, couples, and families dealing with concerns such as:

  • Relationship difficulties

  • Anxiety and chronic stress

  • Life transitions

  • Grief and loss

  • Divorce and separation

  • Communication and conflict

  • Longstanding relationship or family patterns

  • Questions about identity, purpose, and direction

  • Personal growth

  • Clinical hypnosis

You do not need to arrive with everything figured out.

Curiosity, honesty, and some willingness to try something different are enough to begin.

A Little About Me

My path to becoming a therapist grew out of a long-standing interest in a deceptively simple question: What actually helps people change?

That question still organizes much of my professional life.

I continue to study, train, consult, and learn because psychotherapy is a field in which there is always more to understand about people, relationships, attention, learning, and change.

Outside the therapy office, I enjoy spending time with my wife, being outdoors, mountain biking, guiding whitewater rafting trips, practicing judo, and exploring the Sierras.

I am drawn to experiences that require attention, adaptability, and learning how to respond to what is actually happening rather than what you expected to happen.

That probably influences the way I think about therapy too.

Life rarely gives us perfect conditions.

What matters is becoming increasingly able to meet what is here, adjust when something is not working, and keep moving toward what matters.

If that way of approaching therapy makes sense to you, I would be glad to hear from you.
